History and purpose of the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Endowment

In 1993 the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Endowment was founded by Dr. Lois Price Spratlen. Its purpose is to insure a legacy of giving so that the organization may continue to help deserving young people who choose careers in nursing and related health fields. During the first six years the goal was to raise $50,000 by the occasion of the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Organization's 50th Anniversary in 1999. The goal was reached, and now the focus is on the other phases of Endowment development.

Prior to the founding of the Endowment, the Organization had established a legacy of giving. During its first 50 years the Organization awarded over 60 scholarships and provided other financial assistance to support the education of African-heritage students in nursing.

The Endowment has provided a more substantial and sustainable basis for scholarship support than previously existed. During its first five years the Endowment value has exceeded $100,000. Scholarships from returns to Endowment investments by The Seattle Foundation first awarded in 2004.
