Named scholarships

A named scholarship refers to a donor who contributes a minimum of $20,000 to the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Endowment (MMPNE). This Endowment was established in 1993 to serve as a permanent resource for providing scholarships to deserving African-heritage students who desire to pursue careers in professional nursing.

Named scholarship funds will be deposited in the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Endowment with The Seattle Foundation which will manage its growth until the end of time. We selected The Seattle Foundation as our endowment manager because of its mission, core values and performance history.

The scholarship will bear the name of the donor or a person that the donor wishes to honor. Once established and following the first year return on the investment, a named scholarship will provide an annual award of no less than $1000 to a deserving student chosen from a pool of applicants by the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Endowment Committee.

Scholarships are presented annually at the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Organization Scholarship Luncheon. Donors will have the opportunity to present the named scholarship to the recipient and to be personally recognized for their generosity. Additionally, donors are recognized and scholarships are announced in community newspapers and through a variety of publications at the college or university where the recipient is enrolled.

By establishing a named scholarship in the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Endowment you create a legacy. Named scholarships also memorialize the donor and/or designee while promoting the career development of recipients. Thus, in creating a named scholarship and supporting a deserving student, both the donor and the student contribute to the advancement of the profession of nursing.
